Thank You Premier Shutters

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

My friend, Terrence, told me of his plans to convert the bedroom downstairs into a home office. He has worked from home for years but never had a proper work place. He has two overcrowded workstations, though. He said that because of his haphazard corner in the living room, his mother is not able to invite friends to the house and he feels bad about it.

Recently, he has been very involved in DIY projects around the home and said that he is now an expert in fixing curtains. He said he wants to buy a set for his new office too and asked me what color and pattern he should get.

I thought that it would be rather funny to have curtains for his office and proposed that he installs shutters instead. Shutters would look more formal and neat and with the many color and design options available, no, shutters are no longer boring. In fact, many people have successfully blended shutters into the overall theme of a room.

I visited the website of Premier Shutters and am pretty amazed with the many custom designs available, including shapes like arc, circle and triangle. Shutters like these would surely be of interest to any visitor. One could even determine the size of the Louvre. Different people have different requirements, anyway.

If you are giving a room a makeover, you too should consider installing shutters instead of the usual curtains. Premier Shutters will give you plenty of ideas.

Under 35’s are lacking DIY skills

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

A recent study has shown that over half of young people do not possess basic DIY skills.

The report, undertaken for Halifax Home Insurance, shows that in the under 35’s age group, 50% couldn’t wire a plug, 63% couldn’t hang wallpaper and 54% couldn’t bleed a radiator. Many were still reliant on their parents to carry out some of the basic tasks. Other jobs that many younger people would not be willing to attempt included 45% not wanting to try putting up shelves and 36% not wanting to get involved in gardening.

A spokesman for the Halifax said ‘This survey strongly suggests that younger people feel they don’t have the experience or knowledge necessary to tackle even the most basic of home maintenance and DIY tasks. This indicates a significant number of younger householders could be storing up problems for the future, as the lack of home maintenance starts to take its toll on their homes.’

MFI re launches

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Having been one of the big losers of credit crunch, MFI is set to relaunch.

The rights to the MFI brand have been bought by family run plumbing business Walker Group for a cost of £250,000, and so far they have set up a basic website saying

‘In line with ever changing retail landscape, MFI is being specifically refreshed to offer a more innovative and design led product range and shopping experience, whilst continuing the tradition of offering great choice and value for money backed up with first class customer service and support.

The MFI brand re launch promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the UK retail calendar…’

Let’s hope their relaunch improves the public perception of what the brand had become. As Which? reports, in a survey they did in 2008, just before MFI went out of business, they received ‘the lowest customer satisfaction scores in the home and garden sector.’

Blinds in a Box – A UK Newcomer

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

An alternative to Redi in the UK is Blinds in a Box, a relatively new company with an interesting history.

Blinds in a Box was founded just two years ago by a lady in her sixties called Simeone Salik. Mrs. Salik came up with the idea when she was looking for a temporary covering for her windows while waiting for some curtains to arrive. At the time, it was only possible to order temporary blinds from America, so Mrs. Salik along with her designer Janice Dalton, decided to make up some temporary blinds themselves. They immediately saw that what they had created could be marketed. And so the company was born.

Earlier this year, Mrs. Salik and the other directors of Blinds in a Box decided they needed some investment to grow the company, so they applied to go onto the popular UK television programme, Dragonís Den (a show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to investors for financial backing). To their delight, they were offered £40,000 by millionaire businessmen James Caan and Duncan Bannatyne, who immediately saw the potential of the product. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength, and is now probably the leading supplier of temporary blinds in the UK.

Black Out Blinds

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Temporary Blinds are often used as an in-between for windows or doors that have yet to be fitted with adequate curtains or blinds. There is also another fairly important use for these paper blinds and for those of use who have babies or small children, we know exactly what that use is.

During the summer month especially, it can be quite difficult to get our little ones to sleep during the day or at bedtime and even the heaviest of curtains or thickest of blinds.

Temporary Black out Blinds are are great solution for blocking out light at any time of day. They are easy to install and and remove when necessary and can be used as travel blinds when away from the home.

Installing your temporary blinds are easy.

You may cut your blinds to size to fit any window so simply line your blinds up with the window making a small pencil make where you wish to cut your blinds to shape.

Do not stick the blinds in place at this point as you will need to cut them to shape first.

Once you have measured them up and penciled in the cutting mark, you are now ready to cut your blinds to size.

Once your blinds are the correct fit for your windows, you are now ready to hang them.

Release the white tab to reveal the sticky tape adhesive. Line your blind up with your window frame or against the glass. Once this is correctly positioned, you may now stick the blind.

Now your blind is in place you can raise your blinds and peg them either side to keep them i the upright position. To release them into the closed position, un peg them either side and slowly drop the blinds whilst supporting them with your palms. This will help ensure that your blinds do not tear or rip when being moved up and down.

Temporary Blinds

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

There may have been a time in the past or even a time in the future when you have moved into a property where the windows are not furnished or you are in-between decorating jobs. Sleeping in a room with no curtains or blinds can be quite horrible, especially in the summer months when daylight flies through your window at silly o’clock in the morning.

You may not be accustomed to the use of temporary blinds before but they can be a perfect temporary solution for uncovered windows. Temporary blinds are largely made or paper but can also be made of vinyl.

They can be attached easily to any window, generally with a peel off tab that reveals a sticky tape. Your blind can be maneuvered very easily, both up and down by releasing 2 pegs. When you wish your temporary blinds to remain in an upright position, you simply raise your blinds and peg either side to secure their position.

Temporary Blinds are easily fitted with no need for drilling or screwing enabling them to attached easily to frames or glass.

Caring For Your Shutters

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Shutters are a beautiful addition to any home, no matter how big or small, or whatever character your home resembles. Most Plantation Shutters come in a white finish as they blend better with white window frames which are most popular throughout households. The white Shutters are a perfect choice as they make it harder to spot the dust building up on them.

Your beautiful shutters will look refreshing and clean upon fitting but how do you maintain this?

There are many ways to clean your wooden shutters. Whilst vacuuming your floors, you may attach a small brush attachment to the nozzle of your vacuum and hoover the dust away from the shutters. This is very effective , however you may risk scratching or damaging your shutters if you are not particularly careful.

You can also use a yellow duster or a mildly damp cloth, running this carefully along each wooden partition wiping either side of the shutter to collect all of the dust.

A feather duster is another option however this only moves the dust from one place to another.

You may also use a non wax polish on your shutters to treat and care for your wooden shutters.

Maintenance should be carried out approximately once a week to keep your wooden plantation shutters in great condition and dust free.

Wooden Blinds or Plantation Shutters?

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Home improvements are a big step to make in any home, however, when it comes to window furnishing not only can this be an expensive decision, it can also be costly if the wrong choice is made. Curtains and blinds have long been the homeowners choice for dressing any window in your home. Not only does this make the inside of your home warm, comfortable and inviting, this also dresses the outside of your home and the wrong choice could make your house very uninviting and unapproachable to the outside person or visitor.

Over the last few years you have probably noticed a new style of window dressing in your neighborhood. More and more homeowners are opting for wooden blinds or the latest must-have, Plantation Shutters.

Plantation Shutters can match the style and colour of any room and are easily installed by a professional fitter. Plantation shutters fit any size window or bay and can can easily cleaned and maintained and also give the feeling of space as they do not take up as much room as curtains which tend to protrude into the room.

Wooden blinds have the same effect as plantation shutters and can also act as a sound barrier if houses are situated on busy roads or high streets. The cost can vary depending on the quality of wood, the same as plantation shutters.

With Plantation Shutters being so easy to clean, they are a great solution for asthma suffers or people suffering from dust allergies as the levels of dust are minimised.

One bonus for having Plantation shutters fitted is the option to have separated shutter sections allowing light into your home whilst maintaining your privacy with your angled blinds.

The choice would have to come down to lifestyle, budget and personal preference but whatever your decision, research into your options is always the best step forward before making any decisions for your home.
