People living in period properties are being told they can dramatically reduce their energy bills, simply by closing their curtains or shutters at dusk.

Edinburgh researchers claim it could be as effective as fitting double glazing.

The Edinburgh World Heritage Trust has been using thermal imaging cameras to show residents of the capital’s old and new towns how best to cut their bills.

The project has demonstrated a traditional, decidedly low-tech approach can be highly effective.

Windows with the shutters and curtains closed show up in the images in a deep blue colour, demonstrating little heat is escaping.

The team behind the project said other traditional techniques were valuable too and anyone living in a period property should also not overlook the importance of draught excluders.

Chiara Ronchini, energy efficiency officer for Edinburgh World Heritage, said: “We know that improving energy efficiency in historic buildings is very important if we’re to reduce carbon emissions and alleviate fuel poverty.

“There are issues, of course, with historic buildings but they are so well designed that they just need a little push to make sure that they are performing as well as the most modern buildings.

“The thermal imaging exercise really proved that very simple measures, like closing shutters at night or using full length curtains, can have a dramatic effect and make a dramatic improvement on the amount of heat being lost through the windows.”

The project is funded by the Climate Challenge Fund.

Installing Shutters Inside the Window Jamb

1 – Make sure your window is square. Measure the top corner to the opposite bottom corner on both sides. If it is the same, the window is square. If it there is more than a half an inch difference, your window is not square and you should move on to the second section of this article to install your shutters on the outside of the frame of the window.

2 – Make sure that your window jamb is deep enough for shutters. Measure the depth of the window jamb from the front to the nearest obstruction in the back (e.g. lock or handles). There needs to be at about one and a half to two inches of depth to install your shutters inside your window jam. If not, proceed to the next section.

3 – Measure the inside height and width of your window opening. If you are only covering the bottom half of your window, measure to the midway point where you would like you your shutters to end. Measure in three spots and use the largest measurements to purchase your shutters.

4 – Purchase your shutters and cut if necessary. You can have shutters custom fit or you can cut them to the correct size with a saw or plane. Follow all directions on the packaging for correct trimming of your shutters.

5 – Hold up your shutter to your window and mark where the drill holes are for the hinges. Put the shutter down and drill pilot holes. Reposition your shutter and screw it in, making sure it is secure. Use a thin piece of shim wood along your windowsill so you do not install shutters that touch or scrape the sill.

6 – Make sure the shutter is straight and plumb, and that it opens and closes nicely. Repeat the steps for all other shutters.
Install Shutters Outside the Window Jamb

1 – Measure the height and width of your window in three places, and use the largest of the three when purchasing your shutters. If you are installing shutters that only cover half the window, stop at the ending point when measuring the height. For the width, measure for the outside frame of the window to the outside frame on the other side.

2 – Purchase shutters that are either custom made or ones that can be cut. If you need to trim the shutters, use a saw or plane and follow all manufacturer’s instructions. Look on the packaging before buying and cutting to see if you need to add an inch on all sides to accommodate the hanging or wood strips that you will be installing.

3 – Install the wood or hanging strips on the wall using a drill and screws. The wood or hanging strips should be flush against the window frame and are the same height as your shutters. Be sure there are no wires in your walls where you will be drilling, especially if you have an outlet near the window. You should consider consulting an electrician and at the very least, turn off the electricity before drilling into the wall.

4 – Hold up your shutter to the hanging strip and mark where the drill holes are for the hinges. Put the shutter down and drill pilot holes. This wasn’t a problem as our Plantation Shutters come in many different shapes and sizes. Mrs Salford choose form our selection of quality wood, choosing the Esher range, one of most exclusive woods, in silk white in the triangle shape that had caused her most problem over the last few years.

Measuring tape

Determine the size of shutter you will need. By single panel I mean that you will have one shutter panel hinged on each side of the window. You can also get double panels that are hinged on each side and then again to themselves. This creates four panels. For the width of single panel shutters measure the distance between the two sides and divide by two and subtract 1/4″. This will give you two panels that, when added together are 1/2″ narrower than space between the sides.
The height should be the same or slightly higher ( no more than 1 inch) than the distance from the sill to the bottom of the top piece of casing. Get two hinges for each side. These can be 2″ to 2-1/2″ hinges.

Install the hinges on the edge of each panel about 3″ from the top and bottom. Place a 1/4″ shim on the sill and set the panel on the shim. You don’t want the panel to sit right on the sill because it will be hard to operate. Have a helper hold the panel perpendicular to the window on the shim. Put one screw in the top hinge to the inside (3/4″) of the casing with the barrel of the hinge facing towards the inside. Put one screw in the bottom hinge in the same way. Check that the shutter operates freely.

Install the other panel the same way as the first. Check that they are parallel to the sill and with each other in the center. There should be about a 1/4″ between them in the center.

If you want one you can install a hasp that locks the two panels to each other in the center. the hasp will mount to the inside of the panels roughly half way up.
