Plantation Shutters Information

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

One of the benefits of shutters is that they are highly versatile and can be used to compliment a number of different styles, from contemporary to traditional. One of the most commonly used shutter varieties is the plantation shutter. The first plantation shutters were used on the continent in warmer countries where the heat of the day had to be kept out, they did this by keeping the home shaded whilst also allowing air to pass through. The reason they are usually given the plantation label is that when the European powers explored the new world and started colonies, this form of shutter was often used in humid and hot areas where they excelled in keeping homes cool and shady, in fact today many existing plantation houses still have this form of shutter.

Another great reason to choose window shutters are that you’ll be amazed how huge your room will look when you take down those dark heavy curtains that have been up for years! Open louvre blades on plantation shutters allow air to circulate easily within your home, providing good ventilation. Plantation Shutters – The Benefits

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

The original reason for shutters was of course to provide protection for the home from the elements before the use of glass to keep the weather out. However, the benefits of plantation shutters have increased as our homes have changed in style. In essence there are three primary reasons most people want a window covering; light and ventilation control, and privacy. Plantation shutters provide an excellent solution to all three of these, but also come with a range of other benefits that many people will not have seen an increase in popularity in the last two decades.

Plantation Shutters are the perfect addition to your windows and home

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Dating back from ancient Greece, plantation shutters perform many different functions. Their main purpose is providing privacy whilst bringing style to your home. More than just interior vanity, plantation shutters provide added insulation and safety to your home. As the shutters are situated inside your property, they will offer shade to your room as opposed to the outdoor variety attached to the windows that are rarely moved. The outdoor shutters originally functioned as a prelude to glass in openings like windows to keep the elements at bay or where opened to allow the flow of air.

Through out a lot of the western world the architecture emulates ancient works of the Greeks. Not just from the use of shutters, but columns as well. The columns act as a cover for supports throughout the home, as well as shutters are used for insulation or protection, but under a guise of decoration. To put it simply, Plantation Shutters provide, form and function.

Plantation shutters are becoming more and more popular for many different reasons. Firstly, they look great and come in a variety of different types of materials and prices. They all have equal good and bad points depending on what type of room you are planning to install a shutter. Given the current financial climate, people are turning to plantation shutters to improve their homes insulation, they are very durable (vinyl), they allow you to have better control of the lighting in your home and are easy to clean.

I almost forgot to mention, plantation shutters can be custom built to meet any of your homes requirements, from the colours or textures, to the sizes and shapes. Also they will certainly add value to your property. Well worth the investment.

Plantation Shutters have a home in Interior Design

Monday, June 7th, 2010

If you are looking to improve the window interior of your home there are a few things you can do. One option is to add blinds or update your curtains. A better option in my opinion is to fit plantation shutters.
Wooden shutters are far more stylish and consequently add a sense of class to your room or home. Where as curtains or blinds simply cover the opening, plantation shutters are built into the frame. They can give your home the effect you might have when on holiday in the Caribbean if used correctly or a contemporary design feel depending on look you are aiming to achieve. The shutters can be attached internally or externally, for the purpose of this article I am going to focus on the internal variety. In order to allow light louvers are attached so that the shutters can be adjusted to let in light or block light completely also they can be folded back to give a clear view out of the window. Plantation shutters are up to date urban design that adds a fresh look to your interior design.
The wooden type is my favourite, especially the ones made from Western Red Cedar, renowned for its natural beauty and outstanding physical properties, this exceptional beautiful wood has a uniform, fine ground texture with a satin lustre. Another great wooden shutter is made from Parasol Wood also know as Phoenix Tree, the Parasol Tree is a giant evergreen that can grow up to 80m high, it rose from the ashes of the Hiroshima bomb, hence the name Phoenix Tree.
Plantation Shutters have many great attributes such as providing good insulation that will help keep the heating costs down. My own personal view is interior shutters are an investment, as the shutters will add value to your home should you be looking to sell up in the future.

Interior Shutters creates style for your home

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Plantation shutters can be a great way to increase the value of your property, financially and aesthetically. More often these days, designers are installing shutters on the inside of a property to create an elegant and stylish look to your home. Interior shutters are a brilliant alternative to blinds or curtains that can greatly enhance the look and feel of a room, which could be the focal point or finishing touch to the theme you aim to achieve.
With a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit any property, what I hope to illustrate in this article is the different types of Interior Shutters and how they can help to make any home look beautiful.
The wooden shutter is probably the most popular type used in homes today, as they come in a variety of styles that will go with almost any room. They are mainly built from flat solid timber however; some designs have carvings or markings to give a more personal style to rooms. In addition to privacy and great looks, interior shutters are pretty effective at retaining heat in a room as well.
Whether you are looking for a contemporary or traditional style, plantation shutters are so versatile they can fit any design requirements. Plantation shutters take their name from the European explorers starting colonies in the hot and humid parts of America, employing shutters to provide shade and a cooler temperature to the plantation houses. A lot of the remaining early homes still have this type of shutter.
There are two other main materials used in the production of shutters, faux wood (MDF) and vinyl. Each type has there own separate attributes. Wooden shutters are not as well suited to hot and humid conditions where as vinyl is. Although with a good stain and treatment, wooden shutters will be able to take a lot of abuse. Faux wooden shutters are slightly stronger than wooden but not as tough as vinyl. Vinyl shutters are the cheapest option and do not encounter the same problems with moisture as the wooden variety; however, they do not look as attractive and can be detrimental to the style of a home.
I hope this article will give you a brief insight in to the virtues of shutters in interior design. There are such a wide variety of styles available that can enrich a home, creating a unique and elegant look. To sum up this article, interior shutters can add value and style to your home whilst improving insulation for those winter seasons and allowing ventilation for the summer seasons. Most of all plantation shutters can add beauty and elegance to any home.

Can the shutters be fitted externally?

Friday, May 28th, 2010

In short ‘No’. We only supply interior shutters.
Even though our shutters are very durable it is the component parts that would weather badly, not the wood.
Are they custom-made shutters or do you sell the shutters off the shelf?
We only supply and fit custom-made interior plantation shutters. All window and door recesses are different so require extremely accurate measuring. This why there is a delivery time of 6-8 weeks.
What are solid shutters?
These are panels that have no louvers. They were originally installed in reveal boxes in pre-Edwardian houses and were used a couple of times a year only, when the owners decamped for the season. They were not designed to be opened and shut daily like our present designs and that is why so few remain today.
What are Interior Plantation Shutters?
Interior Plantation shutters are louvred panels fixed either inside or outside windows and doors. Plantation Shutters originated in America and the West Indies and date back to before the American Civil War. The term Ante Bellum means pre-war and is used to describe a style of plantation shutters. The louvred shutters offered by Premier Shutters are Ante Bellum.
